Hello Aces, Aros, and Unimportants!

Welcome back to Ace Los Angeles’s monthly newsletter. It’s the start of spooky season and that also means an increase in ace events and content. Expect to that reflected more in next months newsletter though sorry. Ace LA will be at a few events this month, we hope to see some of you there!

October 1st is Nonbinary Kid’s Day.

October 8th is International Lesbian Day.

October 10th Ace LA will be tabling at Cal State LA’s National Coming Out Day Resource Fair. You can find us there from 3-6pm.

October 11th is National Coming Out Day.

October 12-18th is Hate Crime Awareness Week.

October 17-23rd is Genderfluid Awareness Week.

October 20th is Ace LA will have a table at Models of Pride at the LA LGBT Center from 10-4pm.

October 23rd is Disabled Ace Day!

October 26th is Intersex Awareness Day.

As of June 2023, Ace LA will alternate between outdoor in-person (weather permitting) and virtual meetups. For in-person meetups and volunteering, you will be asked to mask unless eating or drinking and will be required to sign a waiver stating you understand the risk of exposure, and that you absolve Ace Los Angeles of any liability. Masks are available on request.

Ace LA has social meetings the second Sunday of every month.
1:30pm - New Member Meeting
2pm - General Meeting The next meeting is on September 13th at Grand Park.

Ace LA’s Business meetings are online, the first Wednesday of every month. 7:00pm - Business Meeting The next meeting is on September 2nd on Zoom.

All meetings are open and we hope to see you there!

This section is where we link you to articles and studies on asexuality and aromantisim.

A brief recap of an Australian survey on sexual identities.

Black Asexuals: Gentle Giant Ace, Asexual Goddess, and Alyshia Rodgers have created Soul Ace Day, to be celebrated for the first time on February 16th 2025.


Tell Me a Story... 

In this section we will spotlight an asexual or aromantic representation in media and entertainment news.

An essay which makes the case that the television show Sex Education offered just that to it’s viewers.

fluently aspec looks at what’s still missing from asexual representation.

An analysis of the character Jason Grace from the book series Heroes of Olympus and the argument to make him aroace.

There’s a fundraising campaign for a short asexual film Aromcom, running through October 20th, find more information on the film and how to support it here.

This section is where we will feature personal essays, reflections, and stories.

A look at the life on an asexual sex worker.

Autostraddle features a personal essay about exploring the intersections between asexuality and kink/bdsm.

Part meme reaction, part representation analysis, and part personal essay, The Queer Kiwi takes on asexuality exclusion in a recent video.


The More You Know

In this section we will provide links to articles and resources designed to educate and inform on asexuality and aromanticism.

Morgan Emily explores how asexual and aromantic identities interact with digital spaces and the importance of the internet in forming ace and aro communities.

On the subject of labels and micro-labels, I have 2 posts for you, an appeal to older and perhaps skeptical people on the benefit labels and a brief guide to respecting them.

Rowan Ellis takes an in-depth look at the ace discourse, diving into identity, community, and queerness, inlucding interviews with Yasmin Benoit, Cody Daigle-Orians, and our very own Megan Carroll.


We Want You! 

This section is for informing you of requests for participation of aces and aros by other organizations, including studies, surveys, archive efforts, media projects, interviews, and policy / community feedback. 

AZE Journal has open submissions for asexual, aromantic, and agender writers on the topic of gender expectations. Submissions can include many different kinds of written or non-written work and are open until Decemeber 15th.

Aspec podcast is looking for people interested in being featured as guests.

AUREA (Aromantic-Spectrum Union for Recognition, Education, and Advocacy) is asking for your experiences as part of a book project on aromantisim and intersectionality.

Queer Author Emily Garside is writing a book on queer television and in an effort to include as much as possible is asking for people to fill out a survey on their experiences.

Oakland University is seeking participants for a research study on minority stress.

University of Southern Queensland is doing a study on psychedelic drug use among queer people.

Researchers at University of Iowa are looking for 500 people to participate in a study on asexuality and reproductive health.

And finally:

A-specs Committed to Anti-Racism has a living document Actionable Ways to Support Palestinians in Gaza on day 355 of the genocide.
